DAVID, THE SHEPHERD BOY

Only a Boy named David,
Only a little sling;
Only a boy named David
But he could pray and sing...

Those were the words
To the children song
We used to sing a lot
For worship and for sing-a-longs.

Around the hills of Bethlehem
David lifted his voice in adoration
And praise to the God of Israel
Who delighted in songs and meditation!

While out in nature tending
His sheep he communed with his Father
Who was teaching and developing him
To be ruler over His people later.

The Lord gave David experiences
To teach him to trust and to be brave;
For out of the paws of the wild animals
He was amazingly delivered and saved.

One day the Philistines and Israel were at war
And into Israel's camp young David trod
Surprised to hear the taunts of Goliath
Defying the armies of the living God.

David saw that all Israel were in fear
As Goliath's defiance at them was hurled;
"Who is this uncircumcised Philistine
That he should defy the armies of Israel?"

His spirit was stirred within him and said
"Let no man's heart fail because of him;
Thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine."
And that he did with five stones and a sling.

AND THE CHILDREN'S SONG CONTINUES:

Only a boy named David
Only a rippling brook;
Only a boy named David
But five little stones he took.

And one little stone went in the sling
And the sling went round and round;
And one little stone went in the sling
And the sling went round and round.

And round and round and round and round
And round and round and round;
And one little stone went up in the air
And the giant came tumbling down.

The secret of young David's success
Was a life of prayer and praise
Which we, too, could emulate
To grow in love, in spirit and in grace.
