I have always said that my baby was a very unusual little fellow. He was the only baby I knew who was up and awake more than he was asleep. At the hospital where we stayed for a few days, he had dark circles around his eyes for lack of sleep. He was always a very light sleeper. He would wake up from even the slightest of sounds. For some reasons, it was difficult for him to go to sleep. In the day time, he would not take a nap like most babies do. More often than not, he was as alert as could be in the day time as well as a good part of the night. However, I found out that if I held him close, he would sleep, but only momentarily because if I tried to put him in the crib, he would wake up. The motion of transporting him from my arms to the crib would wake him up. So, to make sure that he slept some, I would hold him patiently and lovingly in my arms for the duration of his nap. A half-hour long nap called for a celebration. One night I put him in his crib. He must have been awfully tired because, wonder of wonders, he went to sleep right away. I checked to make sure that he was warm and comfortable and I went to bed. In the middle of the night, I woke up with a start. Someone awakened me from a deep, sound sleep. There was nobody else in the house but myself and the baby. Not too long before this, my husband had walked out on us for he didn't want to be tied down with a family while finishing medical school. I looked at the crib, and that was when I realized that I was awakened for a reason. I did not know how the baby managed to do it, but he had his entire head go through the bars of the crib and was hanging down the edge of the crib in an almost 90 degree angle. Could it be that if I was not awakened to correct the situation that the baby's breathing would be obstructed to the point of suffocation? I believed that it could, and I believed that an angel of the Lord awakened me to take care of the situation. Once again, I thanked and praised God for the interposition of angels in my life. "For He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways." Ps. 92:11. |
